In Nd :YAG amplifier spontaneous emission and self-oscillation due
to the high gain properties of Nd:YAG effectively limit the energy storage density in the rod and
therefore the useful energy which can be extracted. In Nd:YAG the energy
storage factor b = 4.73/J a value 30 times higher than
that of Nd:Glass and 105 times higher than that of a ruby rod.
As a result of the high gain in Nd:YAG , only
small inversion level can be achieved
